Summer One Learning

Literacy

Phase 3 sounds: er, ow, oi, er, or, oo(long), oo(short), ar, ear, ure, air

The last two weeks of the half term the children will be participating in a series of activities around the book ‘Hairy McLary’.

 

Maths

Every day the children take part in a 30 minute Maths lesson where they will be developing the following skills:

Number

Match number with the written form.

In practical activities and discussion begin to use the vocabulary involved in adding and subtracting, sharing and grouping.

Count in 2s, 5s and 10s. 

Shape, Space and measure 

Observe and describe properties of 2D and 3D shapes.

Use everyday words to describe position, Talk about, recognise and recreate simple patterns.

Use language such as ‘greater’, ‘smaller’, ‘heavier’ or ‘lighter’ to compare quantities.

 

On a Friday, the children’s Maths lesson will take the format of a Big Maths session. This is a brisk pace activity that aims to recap their mathematical learning so far and improve their mental arithmetic skills.

 

Music

Once a week the children will continue their learning surrounding pitch, rhythm and pulse. They will also develop their performing skills and knowledge of musical instruments.

 

PE

Please ensure your child comes to school with all jewellery removed and their hair tied back if it is longer than shoulder length on a PE day. This half term the children will be engaging in ‘Games’ with equipment such as bean bags, quoits, hoops and balls.

 

Theme

Theme lessons are taught in the afternoons. The children's Literacy and Maths learning continues but mostly the children will complete learning from four main areas:

Understanding the world - (Geography, History, Science and Technology)

Expressive Arts and Design

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

This half term the theme will be Animals Around the World. During theme learning sessions the children will explore activities about animals around the world, looking at their features and beginning about to sort them in a scientific way. They will also look at the Geography of the world and different habitats.

 

Spanish

The children will be taking part in a half an hour Spanish learning lesson every Tuesday. Over the course of this half term the children will be learning about animals.

Mi mascota

The children will learn how to say animal names as well as saying ‘My favourite animal is …’

 

RE

Every week the children will be taking part in a half an hour RE lesson. This half term the children will be learning about Special Places and People. They will have opportunities to discuss places that are special to them as well as learning about special places and leaders within the community.

 

Curiosity Afternoon

Every Tuesday afternoon the children take part in activities that will improve their scientific inquiry and investigation skills through computing, outdoor learning and science. The children will carry out activities such as investigating materials. They will develop their programming skills by directing a on screen object. They will also be spending some time in our outdoor area observing the changes happening during Spring time.

Spring Term Two

Literacy

At the end of the half term, the children will have the opportunity to explore the stories of ‘The Tiny Seed’ by Eric Carle and ‘I Will Not Ever Never Eat a Tomato’ by Lauren Child. The children will participate in phonics activities linked with this two stories where they will be able to use the skills they have learned during the term and put them into practice in a meaningful context.  

 

Maths

Every day the children take part in a 30 minute Maths lesson where they will be developing the following skills:

Strand 2 Knowing and using number facts

Observe number relationships and patterns in the environment and use to derive facts.

Find one more or one less than a number from 1 to 10.

Strand 3 Calculating

In practical activities and discussion begin to use the vocabulary involved in adding and subtracting.

Count repeated groups of the same size.

Strand 4 Understanding Shape

Use language such as ‘circle’ or ‘bigger’ to describe shape and size of solids and flat shapes.

Sort familiar objects to identify their similarities and differences.

Strand 5 Measuring (capacity)

Measuring capacity of liquids and dry materials.

Strand 5 Measuring (Weight)

Use language such as ‘heavier’ or ‘lighter’ to compare quantities.

Strand 6 Handling Data

Count how many objects share a particular property, presenting results, using pictures, drawings or numerals.

This term the children will be learning about how to create their own sounds by using their voices in different ways and by using instruments. They will also be learning a few songs so that they can carry out a Mother’s Day performance.

the children will be taking part in gym lessons where they will explore how their bodies move and how to navigate equipment safely.

This half term the theme will be Nursery Rhymes. During theme learning sessions the children will explore activities around Jack and Jill, Humpty Dumpty and other traditional Nursery Rhymes.

 

Spanish

Over the course of this half term the children will be learning about family and body parts.

This half term the children will be learning about the Christian festival of Easter. They will learn about the Easter story and some of the key people from this time.

 

Curiosity Afternoon

Every Tuesday afternoon the children take part in activities that will improve their scientific inquiry and investigation skills, their computing skills and their outdoors and environmental knowledge. This term the children will carry out activities such as investigating the forces of push and pull, drag and drop skills when using a mouse and typing skills when using a keyboard. They will also continue exploring our outdoor area exploring different activities such a story stick.

Spring Term One

 

Literacy

On a Friday, the children’s Literacy lesson will take the format of a Big Phonics and Big Write session. This is where the children recap their phonics learning in a quick paced, interactive activity and then complete a piece of independent writing.

 

Maths

Every day the children take part in a 30 minute Maths lesson where they will be developing the following skills:

Strand 1 Counting and understanding number

Recognise numerals 0 to 9.

Use ordinal numbers in different contexts.

Strand 2 Knowing and using number facts

Select two groups of objects to make a given total of objects.

Strand 3 Calculating

Begin to relate to addition to combining two groups of objects and subtraction to “taking away”.

Strand 4 Understanding Shape

Use everyday words to describe position.

Strand 5 Measuring (Money)

Understanding the value of coins and comparing ways of making the same value.

Strand 5 Measuring (Time)

Use everyday language related to time: order and sequence familiar events and measure short periods of time.

On a Thursday, the children’s Maths lesson will take the format of a Big Maths session. This is a brisk pace activity that aims to recap their mathematical learning so far and improve their mental arithmetic skills.

 

Music

On Thursdays the children will be learning about volume and pitch specifically looking at high and low pitch. Every lesson they will also use instruments to complement a piece of music. They will have to think about what instruments they can hear and how it makes them feel and why.

 

PE

Reception will have PE once a week. Please ensure your child comes to school with all jewellery removed and their hair tied back if it is longer than shoulder length. This half term the children will be taking part in Dance lessons where they will explore how to express themselves and move their bodies to a piece of music.

 

Values

Every half term the children look closely at some values. In this half term the children will be learning about the value of aspiration. These value will be discussed in their PSE lessons and will also be rewarded with house points when being displayed by the children.

This half term the theme will be Space. During theme learning sessions the children will explore activities around the solar system and the planets that form it, the will also be learning about stars and constellation and about space travel.

 

Spanish

The children will be taking part in a half an hour Spanish learning lesson every Tuesday. Over the course of this half term the children will be continuing to learn about the days of the week and objects they can find in their classroom.

 

RE

Every week the children will be taking part in a half an hour RE lesson. This half term the children will be learning about Growth and Change. They will learn to understand aspects of the natural world, Spring time and new life.

 

Curiosity Afternoon

Every Tuesday afternoon the children take part in activities that will improve their scientific inquiry and investigation skills. The children will carry out activities such as outdoor exploration, science and computing. This term the children will explore light during Science, they will develop their typing skills in computing and in Outdoor Exploration they will experience a campfire. We will cook simple recipes, and they will learn how to stay safe when there is a campfire.

On a Friday, the children’s phonics lesson will take the format of a Big Phonics. This is where the children recap their phonics learning in a quick paced, interactive activity.

Some of these activities are linked to different book during each half term. This half term stories are ‘Halibut Jackson’ by David Lucas and ‘I am Henry Finch’ by Alexis Deacon.

 

 

Maths

Every day the children take part in a 30 minute Maths lesson where they will be developing the following skills:

Strand 1 Counting and understanding number

Say and use number names in order in familiar contexts.

Recognise numerals 0 to 9.

Know that numbers identify how many objects are in a set.

Count reliably up to 10 everyday objects.

Estimate how many objects they use and check by counting.

Use language such as more or less to compare two numbers.

Use ordinal numbers in different contexts.

Count aloud in ones, twos, fives and tens.

Strand 2 Knowing and using number facts

Exploring 1 more and one less from a given number of objects and relating to everyday life.

Developing number facts as we gain one more eg 1 becomes 2 2 becomes 3 etc,

Developing number facts as we have one less 10 becomes 9 etc.

Find one more or one less than a number from 1 to 10.

Strand 4 Understanding Shape

Use familiar objects and common shapes to create and recreate patterns and build models.

Use language such as ‘circle’ or ‘bigger’ to describe shape and size of solids and flat shapes.

Strand 5 Measuring time

Knowing significant times of the day.

Understanding days of the weeks and beginning to understand months of the year.

Exploring height and length in terms of longer than, shorter than and the same length as.

Children are taught height refers to standing objects otherwise we use length.

On a Friday, the children’s Maths lesson will take the format of a Big Maths session. This is a brisk pace activity that aims to recap their mathematical learning so far and improve their mental arithmetic skills.

 

Music

This term the children will be learning songs in preparation for the Christmas performance. They will be learning how to project their voice and perform to an audience.

Every week the children participate in a 45 minutes PE lesson (Badgers – Monday, Hedgehogs – Wednesday and Rabbits – Thursday). Please ensure your child comes to school with all jewellery removed and their hair tied back if it is longer than shoulder length.

This half term the children will be taking part in gymnastics lessons were they will explore how to use space and travel in a variety of ways.

This half term the theme will be People Who Help Us. During theme learning sessions the children will complete activities such as creating creating a healthy plate, label a fire engine and solving the mistery of the stolen books. They will learn about different proffesion and people who help us through lessons, activities, stories and very exciting visitors. During the lasts weeks of the term the theme learning will be ‘Celebrations’ when we will discuss the celebration of Christmas and do lovely arts and crafts to take home at the end of the term.  

 

Spanish

The children will be taking part in a lesson of Spanish every week. Over the course of this half term the children will be learning the numbers and the colours and how to name objects in the classroom. They will also continue to practice greetings

Classroom vocabulary: Puerta (door) Pizarra (board) profesora (teacher) amigos (friends) lapiz (pencil) papel (paper).

 

RE

Every week the children will be taking part in a half an hour RE lesson. This half term the children will be learning about the Christian festival of Christmas and the meanings it has for Christian people.

Every Thursday afternoon the children take part in activities that will improve their scientific inquiry and investigation skills. The children will carry out Science, ICT and Environmental Education activities.

Autumn Term One

Phonics

Every day the children take part in a 30-minute Phonics lesson where they will be developing the following skills:

Name Writing (full name)

Some of these activities are linked to different book during each half term. This half term story is ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ by Maurice Sendak.

Every day the children take part in a 30 minute Maths lesson where they will be developing the following skills:

They also learn to sing as a group and perform in front of a public following the music and using appropriate tone and volume.

Every week the children participate in a 45 minutes PE lesson (Badgers – Monday, Hedgehogs – Wednesday and Rabbits – Thursday). Please ensure your child comes to school with all jewellery removed and their hair tied back if it is longer than shoulder length.

This half term the children will be developing their dancing and spatial awareness skills in a series of lessons. We will be performing dynamic dances to contemporary music and yoga.

This half term the theme will be All About Me. During theme learning sessions the children will complete activities such as drawing, painting and creating someone in their family and thinking and talking about their favourite part of their school and school day. They will also have the opportunity to use technology (iPads and cameras) in these sessions.

 

Spanish

The children will be taking part in a half an hour Spanish learning lesson every week. Over the course of this half term they will have an introduction to Spanish phonics, simple greetings.

 

RE

Every week the children will be taking part in a RE lesson. This half term they will be learning about the celebrations different faiths have.

 

Curiosity Afternoon

Every Tuesday afternoon the children take part in activities that will improve their scientific inquiry and investigation skills. The children will carry out Science, ICT and Environmental Education activities.
