Spring Term Two

Literacy

Phase 3 sounds: or,ur, ow, or, er, ear air ure

Phase 3 Sounds Recap: j, v, w, x, y, z, zz, qu, ch, sh, ng, th, ai, ee, igh, oa,

At the end of the half term, the children will have the opportunity to explore the stories of ‘The Tiny Seed’ by Eric Carle. The children will participate in phonics activities linked with this two stories where they would be able to use the skills learned during the term and put them on practice in a meaningful context.  

 

Maths

Every day the children take part in a 30 minute Maths lesson where they will be developing the following skills:

Observe number relationships and patterns in the environment and use to derive facts.

Find one more or one less than a number from 1 to 10.

In practical activities and discussion begin to use the vocabulary involved in adding and subtracting.

Count repeated groups of the same size.

Use language such as ‘circle’ or ‘bigger’ to describe shape and size of solids and flat shapes.

Sort familiar objects to identify their similarities and differences.

Measuring capacity of liquids and dry materials.

Use language such as ‘heavier’ or ‘lighter’ to compare quantities.

Count how many objects share a particular property, presenting results, using pictures, drawings or numerals.

 

Music

This term the children will be learning about how to create their own sounds by using their voices in different ways and by using instruments. They will also be learning a few songs so that they can carry out a Mother’s Day performance.

 

PE

 Please ensure your child comes to school with all jewellery removed and their hair tied back if it is longer than shoulder length. This half term the children will be taking part in gymnastics lessons where they will explore how to move their bodies in different ways using PE equipment.

 

Values

Every term the children look closely at some values to develop some of their behavior traits. In this half term the children will be learning how to show pride.

 

Theme

Theme lessons are taught in the afternoons. The children's Literacy and Maths learning continues but mostly the children will complete learning from four main areas:

Communication and Language

Understanding the world - (Geography, History, Science and Technology)

Expressive Arts and Design

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

This half term the theme will be People Who Help Us. During theme learning sessions the children will explore activities around different jobs, they would listen to professionals coming to school and describe their experiences.

 

Spanish

Over the course of this half term the children will be learning about family and body parts.

Familia:

La madre - Mamá (mum), El padre - Papá (dad), El hermano (brother), La hermana (sister), La abuela (grandma), El abuelo (Grandpa)

Partes del cuerpo:

La cabeza (head), La orejas (ears), La boca (mouth), La nariz (nose), Los brazos (arms), Las manos (hands), Las piernas (legs), Los pies (feet)

 

RE

This half term the children will be learning about the Christian festival of Easter. They will learn about the Easter story and some of the key people from this time.

 

Curiosity Afternoon

Every Tuesday afternoon the children take part in activities that will improve their scientific inquiry and investigation skills. The children will carry out activities such as food technology , drag and drop skills when using a mouse and also typing skills when using a keyboard. They will also continue exploring fire and fire cooking during outdoor education.

Spring Term One

On a Friday, the children’s Literacy lesson will take the format of a Big Phonics session. This is where the children recap their phonics learning in a quick paced, interactive activity.
 
Maths
Every day the children take part in a 30 minute Maths lesson where they will be developing the following skills:
Number
Recognise numerals 0 to 9.
Use ordinal numbers in different contexts.
Select two groups of objects to make a given total of objects.
Begin to relate to addition to combining two groups of objects and subtraction to “taking away”.
Space shape and measure.
Use everyday words to describe position.
Understanding the value of coins and comparing ways of making the same value.
Use everyday language related to time: order and sequence familiar events and measure short periods of time.
 
On a Friday, the children’s Maths lesson will take the format of a Big Maths session. This is a brisk pace activity that aims to recap their mathematical learning so far and improve their mental arithmetic skills.
 
Music
One day a week the children will be learning about rhythm and pitch specifically looking at high and low pitch. Every lesson they will also listen to a piece of music and begin to learn the skills of appraising. They will have to think about what style of music it is, what instruments they can hear and how it makes them feel and why.
 
PE
In reception we do PE every Thursday. Please ensure your child comes to school with all jewellery removed and their hair tied back if it is longer than shoulder length. This half term
the children will be taking part in Dance lessons where they will explore how to express themselves and move their bodies to a piece of music.
 
PSE
Every Monday the children take part in a PSE lesson this half terms focus is around dreams and goals. Where we will pay particular attention to challenging ourselves and persevering.
 
Theme
Theme lessons are taught in the afternoons. The children's Literacy and Maths learning continues but mostly the children will complete learning from four main areas:

Understanding the world - (Geography, History, Science and Technology)
Expressive Arts and Design
Personal, Social and Emotional Development 
This half term the theme will be Dinosaurs. During theme learning sessions the children will explore what Dinosaurs are, why they are extinct,  the environment the lived in as well as getting to know about lots of different types of dinosaur.
 
Spanish
The children will be taking part in a half an hour Spanish learning lesson every Tuesday. Over the course of this half term the children will be continuing to learn about colours and numbers.

RE
Every week the children will be taking part in a half an hour RE lesson. This half term the children will be learning about Growth and Change. They will learn to understand aspects of the natural world, Spring time and new life, we will also look at the Chinese new year festivals.
 
Curiosity Afternoon
Every Tuesday afternoon the children take part in activities that will improve their scientific inquiry and investigation skills. The children will rotate through activities base around outdoor learning, ICT and science.

 

Autumn Term Two

Literacy

Number

Say and use number names in order in familiar contexts, recognise numerals 0 to 9, know that numbers identify how many objects are in a set, count reliably up to 10 everyday objects and start learning one more and one less than a number.

Shape

Use familiar objects and common shapes to create and recreate patterns and build models, Use language such as ‘circle’ or ‘bigger’ to describe shape and size of solids and flat shapes, Name basic 2’d’ shapes. Exploring height and length in terms of longer than, shorter than and the same length as.

 

On a Friday, the children’s Maths lesson will take the format of a Big Maths session. This is a brisk pace activity that aims to recap their mathematical learning so far and improve their mental arithmetic skills.

 

Music

Every week the children will be learning songs in preparation for the Christmas performance. They will be learning how to project their voice and perform to an audience.

 

PE

We will be doing PE every Thursday. Please ensure your child comes to school with all jewellery removed and their hair tied back if it is longer than shoulder length. This half term the children will be taking part in gymnastics lessons were they will explore how to use space and travel in a variety of ways.

Theme lessons are taught in the afternoons. The children's Literacy and Maths learning continues but mostly the children will complete learning from four main areas:

Understanding the world - (Geography, History, Science and Technology)

Expressive Arts and Design

Personal, Social and Emotional Development 

This half term the theme will be Halloween (1 week), Space (3 weeks) and Christmas (3 weeks). During theme learning sessions the children will complete activities such as creating a space suit for a teddy bear, paint planets with watercolors, read the story Aliens Love Underpants, and make different Christmas decorations.  

 

Spanish

The children will be taking part in a half an hour Spanish learning lesson every Tuesday. Over the course of this half term the children will be learning the

colours and  how to name objects in the classroom. They will also continue to practice greetings

RE

Every Thursday the children will be taking part in a half an hour RE lesson. This half term the children will be learning about the Christian festival of Christmas and the meanings it has for Christian people.

 

Curiosity Afternoon

Every Tuesday afternoon the children take part in activities that will improve their scientific inquiry and investigation skills. The children will carry out activities such as Outdoor Learning, science (investigating light sources) and computing (programming and controlling technology equipment).  

 

Autumn Term One

Phonics

Every day the children take part in a 30-minute Phonics lesson where they will be developing the following skills:

Name Writing (full name)

Phase 2 sounds: Set 1, 2, 3, 4 (s,a,t,p, i,n,m,d ,g,o,c,k, ck,e,u,r)

HF Words: a, an, as, if, in.

 

 

Maths

Every day the children take part in a 30 minute Maths lesson where they will be developing the following skills.

Counting using 1:1 correspondence.

Estimation.

2D Shapes and their properties

Capacity: full, half full and empty.

Repetitive patterns.

 

Music

Once a week the children have a music lesson. This term the children will be learning about rhythm and pitch and will practice copying sounds made by others.

They also learn to sing as a group and perform in front of a public following the music and using appropriate tone and volume.

 

PE

Every Thursday the children participate in a 45 minutes PE lesson. Please ensure your child comes to school with all jewellery removed and their hair tied back if it is longer than shoulder length.

This half term the children will be developing their dancing and spatial awareness skills in a series of lessons. We will be performing dynamic dances to contemporary music and yoga.

This half term the theme will be All About Me and Traditional Telas. During theme learning sessions the children will complete activities such as drawing, painting and creating someone in their family and thinking and talking about their favourite part of their school and school day. They will also have the opportunity to use technology (iPads and cameras) in these sessions. They will explore the traditional tales of 'The 3 little Pigs', 'Jack and the Beanstalk' and 'Goldilocks'.

 

Spanish

The children will be taking part in a half an hour Spanish learning lesson every week. Over the course of this half term they will have an introduction to Spanish phonics, simple greetings.

 

RE

Every week the children will be taking part in a RE lesson. This half term they will be learning about the celebrations different faiths have.

 

Curiosity Afternoon

Every Tuesday afternoon the children take part in activities that will improve their scientific inquiry and investigation skills. The children will carry out Science, ICT and Environmental Education activities (Wild learning).
